Vale Peter Barton

Members have been saddened by the passing on June 15 of Peter Barton, one of the stalwarts of our organisation over many years.

Peter was a set designer and builder of amazing skill and ingenuity, a lighting and sound technician able to adapt his skills from the small church hall used for early productions to the new surrounds of the Civic Theatre when it opened in 1963.

As well, he turned his hand to directing and was responsible for such musical feasts as Fiddler on the Roof, Stop the World I Want to Get Off, The Sound of Music and Brigadoon.

It is doubtful if there would be a show programme from the 1950s to 80s without Peter Barton’s name noted in some role.

He played a major part in the administration of the School of Arts, and also took his talents to students in Charles Sturt University’s theatre courses. Theatre in Wagga is richer for the talents of Peter Barton.

Our sympathies go out to his wife, Fay, and family.
