Neighbourhood Watch
by Lally Katz
Directed by Michael Mitchell
When God said: ‘Thou shalt love thy neighbour’, he obviously hadn’t reckoned on Ana, a battle hardened, Hungarian-Australian World War survivor whose bark is as ferocious as her German shepherd’s.
Catherine is her neighbour: twenty-something, curious and hopeful that a better world is on its way … but in the meantime watching episodes of The West Wing with her housemate.
When these two lost souls find each other in a suburban cul-de-sac, they spark up a friendship that transcends generations and cultures as both try to navigate the struggles of finding your way in contemporary Australia, and from each other Ana and Catherine forge an alliance that carries them to war-torn Hungary and back again, as they help one another to reconcile the past, find ways to move forward.
A staple on the HSC Drama play list, Neighbourhood Watch is a humorous, heart-warming and at times devastating Australian story of hope, grief, survival and friendship that will appeal to adult audiences of all ages.
